Introduction and Overview

Bharati College, University of Delhi, has been constantly working towards strengthening the India’s knowledge traditions within the scope of higher education. In recent years, the national focus on Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS) and the academic directions emerging from the University of Delhi have encouraged the College to take structured steps in this area.

The College recognises that India’s intellectual heritage across all fields such as language, society, knowledge practices etc. College understands that IKS offers valuable perspectives for today’s learners. With this understanding, we are in the process to develop academic initiatives that bring Indian knowledge traditions into meaningful learning with modern disciplines. As an initial step, the College has submitted a proposal for establishing a Centre for Tribal Studies under the IKS framework.

Vision and Objectives

The broader vision of the College is to contribute to an Indian approach to higher education while maintaining strong academic rigour. The IKS initiative at Bharati College seeks to create spaces where students and faculty can engage thoughtfully with India’s knowledge traditions in ways that are relevant to present day academic needs.

The College aims to encourage interdisciplinary learning that connects classroom teaching with field based understanding. Students are being encouraged to explore knowledge systems rooted in Indian contexts with the help of faculty members to support mindful integration of such perspectives into their learning and future goals.

Another important objective is to nurture student curiosity and research orientation. By introducing carefully designed academic activities around IKS themes, the College hopes to help students develop a deeper appreciation of India’s intellectual heritage alongside their regular courses.

Academic and Institutional Relevance

The IKS initiative at Bharati College is closely aligned with the academic priorities of the University of Delhi and the spirit of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Both emphasise experiential learning, interdisciplinary engagement and inclusion of Indian knowledge traditions in higher education.

For students, these efforts are expected to open new avenues for research exposure, field understanding and critical thinking rooted in Indian contexts. The initiative also supports the development of research skills, documentation abilities and academic writing among undergraduate learners.

From an institutional perspective, the initiative strengthens Bharati College’s ongoing commitment to research-oriented teaching. It also creates opportunities for collaboration with other DU Colleges and academic bodies working in the IKS domain. In the longer term, such efforts can contribute to building a more grounded and a sensitive academic environment within the University system.

The Way Forward/ Future Plans

Looking ahead, Bharati College plans to expand its engagement with Indian Knowledge Systems in a gradual and academically sound manner. The immediate focus will remain on building awareness, strengthening faculty participation and creating meaningful learning opportunities for students.

Subject to approval of concerned bodies, the College hopes to operationalise the proposed Centre for IKS and develop collaborative linkages with relevant academic and research institutions. Greater emphasis will also be placed on student research participation.

The College remains committed to moving forward thoughtfully towards balancing innovation with academic so that its IKS initiatives grow in a sustainable and meaningful way within the University of Delhi framework.
