Introduction

The National Service Scheme (NSS), a public service initiative under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in the Indian government, takes pride in its vision to empower the country's youth by fostering skill development and shaping positive attitudes. The program aims to contribute to the nation's well-being through various community welfare services. NSS emphasizes not only ethical standards for societal benefit but also the cultivation of a determined and compassionate youth geared towards a brighter future. Launched in 1969 during Gandhiji's Centenary Year, the scheme is guided by the motto 'Not Me But You.'

Throughout the decades, The National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of Bharati College has grown to be an esteemed sector of campus-community wellbeing with like-minded women volunteers seeking for the betterment of everyday life. With noteworthy contributions and achievements lined up along the years, the programme has given our youth a new direction and a unique way to contribute to civil society. The central feature of the program involves fostering a strong sense of responsibility and dedication to society among the youth. Additionally, it aims to cultivate a profound love for the homeland and instill a sense of discipline.

Building on the motto of NSS 'Not Me But You', it upholds a set of Aims and Visions:

The NSS seeks to contribute to and enhance the overall societal well-being while nurturing qualities like empathy, discipline, and a spirit of selfless service among it's youth volunteers.

The aim of Project Sakar is to promote development in the underprivileged sections of society, particularly focused on villages. Under this project, adoption of villages has been carried out and active contribution has been done for their growth. The primary objectives of this project include::

Project Amani:

मनोशक्ति - मनोवृद्धि ॥

With an extensive focus on raising awareness on Mental Health and wellbeing, the NSS unit of Bharati College introduces ‘Project Amani: मनोशक्ति - मनोवृद्धि’. In Sanskrit language, ‘Amani’ represents a ‘road’ or ‘way’ and in Swahili, the term 'Amani' means Peace. Therefore, this Project aims to follow the Path to Peace. Via this initiative, NSS Bharati not only seeks to promote the importance of Mental Health and spread awareness but also address the myths and stigma surrounding it thereby serving the community and contributing to its greater good.

Key points to be noted:
    This initiative does not serve as a platform for providing professional therapeutic services, counseling sessions or support groups by students or individuals without appropriate licensing. This project strictly adheres to ethical guidelines and will not tolerate violations under any circumstances. All activities must be conducted in accordance with professional standards. This project is to be solely associated with licensed professionals in case of dissemination of knowledge and information regarding Mental Health and psychological well-being. The students' role will be limited to spreading awareness via activities like Rallies, discussion sessions, dramas, organization of competitions and forms of media under careful supervision.

Project Dhara:

अहिंसा परमो धर्मः ||

Founder and Head: Aradhya, B.A. Prog. (Computer Application + Political Science) Date of Launch: 4th October, 2024

A subsidiary project under Project Dhara, Project Pashusneh aims to promote animal welfare by educating communities about animal rights, cruelty prevention, and responsible behavior toward stray and domestic animals.

Objectives:

  • Awareness & Education: Conduct webinars, competitions, and training sessions to educate people about animal rights, first aid, and ethical pet adoption.
  • Campus & Public Welfare: Ensure the well-being of stray animals by maintaining water bowls, organizing cleanliness drives, and preventing environmental hazards.
  • Collaboration & Outreach: Partner with animal shelters, NGOs, and institutions to amplify the impact of animal welfare efforts.
Events organized:
  • Installation of pots filled with water on campus .
  • Feeding of stray animals in the district park.

Nss Time Capsule: Unforgettable Moments

1) Samarpan’24- NSS annual meet, 26th of January, 2024

The first ever annual meet of the NSS unit of Bharati College, Samarpan’24, was organised on 26th of January, 2024. The event marked a significant dot on the NSS calendar with the introduction of our program officer, announcement of the Core and Soft Core teams, and Volunteers of the Month. Additionally, an inspiring speech by the Principal added the final touch of prominence. Indeed, every moment was a testament to dedication and unity.

2) Jaagrat'24 - NSS annual fest, 20th of March, 2024

Jaagrat'24, NSS Bharati’s first-ever annual fest was organised on 20th March, 2024. It was orchestrated by different competitions including Inter NSS Declamation Competition and Inter College Folk Lore Competition. The event marked the rich cultural heritage of India through cultural representative stalls in the fest. The main highlight of the fest was the celebration of Phoolon ki Holi. Jaagrat'24 was a resounding success.

3) NSS Trip to Jammu, 6th of May- 8th of May, 2024

NSS unit of Bharati College witnessed its very first, 3 day trip to Jammu from 6th May to 8th May, 2024. The 3 day trip included various visits to places like BOP Golpattan, Sewa Bharati's Girls Hostel - Drishti, Jammu Tawi Temples, Trek of Vaishnavi Devi and much more.  The trip orchestrated volunteers with ground level experience of living conditions of people in dynamic settings, team work, communication skills and many more.

4) NSS Day Celebration, 24th September, 2024

On 24th September 2024, the NSS unit celebrated NSS Day with enthusiasm where volunteers revisited saplings planted earlier in collaboration with the Garden Committee, known as Green Check Day . A fun activity using a mirror  to spread joy among students and staff,  celebrating love and happiness. The main highlight was a visit to SLOAH senior care, where volunteers engaged with residents. The event promoted service and community bonding. 

5) Launch of Project Amani- Mental Health Project, 25th September, 2024

On 25th September 2024, the NSS unit launched Project Amani to raise mental health awareness. Volunteers participated in activities and attended a seminar by a renowned psychiatrist. The project fostered discussions and a supportive environment for mental well-being. It equipped volunteers with essential knowledge to contribute effectively. The initiative marked a significant step in addressing mental health issues in India.

6)SHS 2024 campaign 18th , 19th, 20th , 23rd and 24th september, 2024

NSS Bharati actively participated in the Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) 2024 campaign, emphasizing cleanliness, sustainability, and community involvement. A 3-day Mega Cleaning Drive (Sept 18-20) transformed the campus and nearby areas, followed by Dhara Day (Sept 23), promoting deep cleaning, waste management, and awareness. Green Check Day (Sept 24) focused on nurturing previously planted saplings, reinforcing long-term environmental responsibility. The events encouraged teamwork, voluntarism, and sustainable practices, aligning with SHS 2024's vision. NSS Bharati’s efforts fostered a cleaner, greener campus and inspired continued community-driven environmental stewardship,

These were the days  where volunteers cleaned the campus and spread awareness about cleanliness. People following cleanliness practices were tagged with stickers and given a shoutout on Instagram. A rally with the slogan "Clean Earth, Green Earth" reinforced environmental responsibility. The event encouraged students to maintain a clean and green campus. 

7) Diwali with My Bharat, Deepotsav Celebration with residents of Slums- 28th October, 2024 and 31st October, 2024

In October 2024, NSS Bharati took part in Diwali with My Bharat, bringing together students, faculty, NGO members, and underprivileged juggi families to celebrate the festival with joy and inclusivity. On October 28th, a Deepotsav was held on campus, where volunteers decorated with diyas, rangolis, and flowers, welcoming guests with gifts and a festive meal to promote community engagement. On October 31st, NSS volunteers visited juggi families, distributing essentials, sweets, and awareness calendars, sparking discussions on education, health, and sustainability. Both events strengthened social responsibility, empathy, and togetherness, fostering meaningful connections. The initiative emphasized a pollution-free and inclusive Diwali, spreading happiness across different communities. NSS Bharati’s efforts made the celebration a resounding success, inspiring future outreach programs.

8) National Integration Camp, 6th of November - 12th of November, 2024

NSS Bharati participated in the National Integration Camp (NIC) 2024 at Chaudhary Bansi Lal University, Haryana, from 6th-12th November, fostering unity through cultural exchange and national integration. Activities included yoga, group formations, competitions (poster, slogan, debate, skit, and patriotic songs), awareness campaigns (Clean India, water conservation rally), and academic visits (BITS Pilani, BRCM Law College). Cultural performances highlighted India's diversity, with the University of Delhi’s showcase standing out. The camp concluded with a grand closing ceremony, where NSS Bharati secured 3 prestigious certificates, contributing to Delhi University’s impressive tally of 10. The event strengthened bonds, encouraged digital literacy, and celebrated the spirit of "Youth for My Bharat.”

9) Jaagrat'25 - Annual Fest of NSS Bharati 2025 - 5th and 6th of March, 2025

Jaagrat'25, a vibrant celebration held on March 5th and 6th, 2025, featured a diverse range of events under various projects. The first day kicked off with an Express Through Art competition under Project Amani, encouraging self-expression, and a debate competition on organ donation under Project Ayushman. The second day showcased events like Echoes of the Senses, promoting mindfulness, Ecovision: Green India Generation, focusing on environmental sustainability, and a declamation competition on the role of NSS in bridging social gaps. The evening culminated in an Open Stage Function and the grand finale, 'Phoolon ki Holi', where the campus was adorned with flowers and music, fostering a sense of togetherness and celebration among students and faculty. Jaagrat'25 concluded on a high note, leaving behind memories of joy, unity, and happiness.

10) NSS Educational Trip to Mount Abu and Udaipur -April’2025

The NSS unit of Bharati organised a five-day educational trip from 9th to 13th April 2025. The selected destinations, Mount Abu and Udaipur in Rajasthan, offered the participants a rich blend of cultural heritage, architectural marvels, natural beauty, and historical significance.The tour was not merely a recreational outing but an immersive educational experience that allowed students to witness the diversity of Indian culture and appreciate its deep historical roots.

11) Yoga Sangam, 21st June, 2025

NSS Bharati actively participated in the Yoga Sangam event, a collaborative initiative by the Sports Department, National Service Scheme, and YUVA Unit, held on International Yoga Day. The event aimed to unite minds and bodies in perfect harmony through the practice of yoga, promoting physical, mental, and spiritual well-being. In presence of our principal Prof.(Dr.)Saloni Gupta, approximately 120 participants, including students and faculty members, came together to experience the transformative power of yoga. The event fostered a sense of community and well-being, promoting a holistic approach to health and wellness. The collective practice of yoga encouraged mindfulness, self-awareness, and inner peace, aligning with the values of NSS Bharati.

12) Vikas Drishti: Survey in the Slums of Delhi - A Collaborative Initiative, August’2025 onwards

Bharati College, NSS Bharati and Sewa Bharati, is launching Vikas Drishti, a comprehensive initiative aimed at understanding the living conditions and socio-economic status of residents in different slum areas of Delhi. Vikas Drishti would also be launched as an academic project of Bharati College where students from various fields can work in their specific field oriented team to complete their academic project as well in this way students can also be benefitted academically too, furthermore, this will aid  students with a valuable opportunity to engage in community service, research, and development.

The survey will be conducted in four phases: Pilot study, training sessions, final survey, and analysis and documentation, scheduled to take place from August onwards. The primary objective of the Vikas Drishti  is to gather accurate and reliable data on various aspects of life in the Sewa Bastis comprising of community habitats, slums and bastis,  including health conditions, access to basic facilities, education, and economic conditions, etc. The data collected will be used to identify areas that require targeted support and to inform policy decisions that can positively impact the lives of the residents.

On the occassion of 79th Independence day, Vikas Drishti took its way out, it was the beginning of the pilot study in the Peeli Kothi, it was coming of true independence with responsibility and potential future change for better.

As part of this initiative, students will have the opportunity to participate in the Vikas Drishti , gaining hands-on experience in survey design, data collection, and analysis.

13)Swachhta Abhiyan : Delhi ko Kude se Azadi Initiative, August 2025

Bharati College, University of Delhi, is organizing the Swachhta Abhiyan Action for the month of August 2025, from August 1st to August 31st, under the "Delhi ko Kude se Azadi - Each one, Clean One" initiative. This campaign aims to promote cleanliness, environmental protection, and conservation among students and staff. The primary objective of the Swachhta Abhiyan Action is to instill a sense of personal and collective responsibility for cleanliness and environmental protection, promote practical awareness through engaging activities, and encourage behavioral change through reflection and action.

The NSS Unit, NCC Unit, and Palash Eco Club are actively involved in executing the action plan. The NSS Unit has already organized several events, including the Spot the Mistake Challenge on August 7; Roll Flashcards, Rock Cleanliness on August 11; Fact or Trash Challenge on August 14; Clean Green Zones Initiative on 18th August and NSS will organize 3 more events on 21st (Litter Critic Activity), 25th (Message Jar Activity ) and 27th August (Eco-Promise Leaf Activity ) , under the same. Throughout August, various events will be organized by NSS, NCC, and Palaash to complete the campaign.

14) Independence Day Celebration, August 15, 2025

The National Service Scheme (NSS) of Bharati College, University of Delhi, celebrated Independence Day on August 15, 2025, with great enthusiasm and commitment to social responsibility. As part of the Har Ghar Tiranga Campaign, NSS Bharati participated in a Flag Hoisting ceremony and Cleanliness Drive in the college campus, starting at 9:00 AM. The Cleanliness Drive, titled #DelhiKoKudeSeAzadi, aimed to promote waste segregation and clean streets, spreading the spirit of freedom and responsibility among the college community. Through its participation in these events, NSS Bharati emphasized the importance of true freedom coming with responsibility and demonstrated its commitment to community service.

In a parallel initiative, NSS Bharati organized a Vikas Drishti Survey and sweet distribution at Peeli Kothi, Hari Nagar. The Vikas Drishti Survey marked its beginning with a pilot study in Peeli Kothi on the occasion of Independence Day, aiming to collect household data to plan impactful projects. The survey will provide valuable insights into the needs and challenges of the local community, enabling NSS Bharati to design and implement effective initiatives. The sweet distribution event added a touch of festivity to the celebration, spreading joy and warmth among the participants.

Through these initiatives, NSS Bharati reaffirms its commitment to promoting social responsibility and community service. The celebration of Independence Day served as a reminder of the importance of working together towards the betterment of society, and NSS Bharati is dedicated to continuing this work through its various programs and initiatives.
