Can this be a reality?
Most of the apprehension of the parents, irrespective of the age of the child pertain to
‘Am I doing the right thing for my child?’ ‘How do I make my child one of the best in every field?’
‘How do I discipline my child so as he/she is confident, an achiever?’ and many more such questions are always paramount on the parents’ mind.
As a child Psychologist when I get to see the behavioural and adjustment related challenges in children, the important observation of the parent child interaction patterns has many hidden answers to the problem.
There are many parenting styles and disciplining techniques used by the parents. These are unique to the parents and children, which are dependent on many factors both for parents and children.
Have you ever tried to remove the obstacles or hindrances which a child might encounter during the course of development at different ages? The intent is always very good when the parent writes the homework, or goes to the teacher for marks on a project or some assignment, or even to the extent of ensuring that the child does not face failure at any point of time.
As parents, we are always anxious about certain issues which a child might be facing and parents try to intervene to the extent to shield the child from any challenges and try to create opportunities where the success will be easily achievable. I am sure many of you can resonate with the ideas propounded here.
This is the most recent method of parenting under research and is called the ‘Snow Plough Parenting’ style.
The snow plough parent is busy removing the obstacles.
‘The parent is so anxious that they might be constantly monitoring what the child is eating’
Let the child fall, commit mistakes, face failures and challenges. These are crucial for the development of the child to be a rounded person
The children of such parents are prone to be less resilient in the face of failures, can’t cope in the world if left on their own without the invisible support which was always extended by the parents
In my future blog posts, I shall discuss parenting to enhance confidence, coping and decision-making skills of children.
